About us

Darlington and District Talking Newspaper Charity Number:1188452

Established in Darlington in 1979; we are a local charity providing a weekly audio recording of local news and magazine articles free of charge for the blind and visually impaired.

We are one of over five hundred such organisations throughout the country. Each Talking Newspaper is independent but may share the services and information provided by the Talking Newspaper Federation (TNF)

Become a volunteer

There are a variety of volunteer roles, which are organised on a rota basis.

Producer/Sound technician:-

Experience of using a mixing desk is advantageous.
They work a 4 week rota and do the recording on a Wednesday evening, and produce a master CD and master memory stick of the recording.

Reader:-

All our readers have a reading audition to check for clarity of speech and a good reading manner. They work a 5 week rota and do the recording on a Wednesday evening.

News Editor:-

The editor collects pieces of local news for the week from the Northern Echo,from whom we have permission to use their copyright. they make the edition available ready for the Wednesday evening recording. They work a 5 week rota.

Magazine Editor:-

The editor collects magazine articles from various publications from whom we have permission to use their copyright and makes the edition available ready for the Wednesday evening recording. They work a 5 week rota.

Copying teams:-

They work on a Thursday morning on a 2 week rota.They copy the recording from the masters onto Cd and memory sticks to send out to our listeners. They also upload the recording onto the Darlington Newspaper website and also the British Wireless for the Blind Fund website.

Clearing team:-

They work on a Wednesday morning each week, getting the returned wallets ready for the new edition to be sent back out on the Thursday.
